Offline vs Online
“No WiFi” is the most abused label on the App Store. We only count offline games whose own listing claims it — then compare them against the always-connected majority. Here's what actually survives airplane mode.
Side by side
| Offline | Online | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs a connection | No — verified from App Store text | Yes, for core play |
| Works on a flight | Yes (cache assets online first) | No, or degraded |
| Save location | Usually on-device | Often server-side |
| Ads | If present, don't block offline play | Can hard-block when offline |
| Multiplayer | Rare / local only | Common |
| Shelf size (tracked) | 19 verified offline | 105 require connection |
| Best for | Flights, subways, dead zones | Live-service, social, real-money |

Which should you install?
- Pick offline — you commute through dead zones or fly often — but launch once on WiFi first to cache assets.
- Pick online — you want multiplayer, live events, or real-money play and you're always connected.
- Always test — even a tagged-offline game can need a first online launch — toggle airplane mode before you leave.
Both cohorts are pulled live from our daily US App Store crawl and ranked by heat score, so the lists above reflect what's actually gaining traction today — not a hand-built list that went stale months ago.
FAQ
How do you verify a game is really offline?
Conservatively. A game earns the offline label only if it carries an explicit offline tag in our dataset, or its App Store text says so — phrases like “no internet required,” “play offline,” or “airplane mode.” We never infer offline support from genre.
Why do some “offline” games still break on a plane?
Three usual culprits: ad screens that can't finish loading offline, server-side saves, and daily-login economies. That's why we recommend a first online launch, then testing airplane mode before you rely on it.
Can online games ever be played offline?
Sometimes partially, but if the core loop is server-driven you'll hit an error or an empty profile. Assume no unless the listing says otherwise.
